The Les McCann Trio ~ Compared To What

Thank You To Ken At YouTube For The Tune

My Pop left the mortal plane on 11~8~07...he was a fan of jazz. Cannonball Adderley, Dizzy Gillespie, Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Eckstine, Joe Williams, Count Basie, Dave Brubeck, Duke Ellington, Stanley Turrentine, Miles Davis, Chet Baker, Clark Terry, King Oliver, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, are only a few of the artists that were always spinning on his turntable. A tune i remember him being particularly fond of is Compared To What, performed live in 1969 by the Les McCann Trio at The Montreux Jazz Festival. May the gods speed Pop. Wherever your spirit may be, i know the styli are pristinely sharp.

Thursday

okiedoke, seached for Thursday songs to no avail. well less than a handfull, and none that i liked---the few i did find were too depressing i.e. Bowie's Thursday's Child. i know the rhyme says "thursday's child is full of woe" but jeeze! So i'm cheating again and stealing a cheezy idea that most newspapers have on thursday [ahem] i mean thersday and going with the Indigo Girl's. i know, i know, but you must admit their harmonies sway you to forgive my lameness here [shrug].

Boomtown Rats featuring Sir Bob Geldof ~ Tell Me Why [I Don't Like Mondays]

thanks to noCoffee at YouTube

On Monday, January 29, 1979, Brenda Ann Spencer wounded eight children and one police officer and killed principal Burton Wragg and custodian Mike Suchar in a shooting spree at Cleveland Elementary School in San Diego, California, United States.

The school was across the street from her house. She used the rifle she had recently been given for Christmas by her father. When the six-hour incident ended and the sixteen-year-old was asked why she had committed the crime, she shrugged and replied, "I don't like Mondays. This livens up the day." She also said: "I had no reason for it, and it was just a lot of fun." "It was just like shooting ducks in a pond." and "[The children] looked like a herd of cows standing around, it was really easy pickings."

She pleaded guilty to two counts of murder and assault with a deadly weapon, and was sentenced to prison for 25 years to life, currently being served at The California Institution for Women in Corona. She has been eligible for parole four times and has been turned down each time, most recently in 2005. She will be eligible for parole again in 2009.

Al Bowlly [accompanied by pianist Monia Liter ] The Very Thought of You

Albert Allick 'Al' Bowlly (January 7, 1890/1899(?)–April 17, 1941) was a popular singer in the United Kingdom during the 1930s, making more than 1,000 recordings between 1927 and 1941. Bowlly was born in Mozambique to Greek and Lebanese parents who met en route to Australia and moved to South Africa. He was brought up in Johannesburg, South Africa. He was killed by the explosion of a parachute mine outside his apartment in London during the Blitz.

Wikipedia

"The Very Thought of You" is a pop standard published in 1934, with music and lyrics by Ray Noble. In addition to Noble's own hit recording of the song with his orchestra, featuring the vocals of Al Bowlly, there was also a popular version recorded that same year by Bing Crosby. A decade later, the song was on the charts again in a version by Vaughn Monroe. Doris Day sang the song in the 1950 movie Young Man with a Horn, a fictional tale partly based on the life of early jazz trumpeter Bix Beiderbecke.

In 1961, The Very Thought of You was on the charts again in a rhythm & blues version recorded by Little Willie John, and three years later a rock and roll version by Ricky Nelson reached #19 on the Billboard chart. There have also been numerous recordings of the song by jazz artists, including Nat "King" Cole, Carmen McRae, and Billie Holiday. Most recently, Tony Bennett and Sir Paul McCartney recorded a version of the song for the former's Grammy-winning 2006 album Duets: An American Classic. An instrumental version of the song is also among the background music in the film 'Casablanca' in the scene where Sascha kisses Rick Blaine on the cheek.

One of the more recent releases of the song was by Rod Stewart in his successful "Great American Songbook" trilogy of albums.

Bowie Jean Genie

The Jean Genie From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"The Jean Genie" is a single by David Bowie, released in November 1972. One of Bowie’s most famous songs, it was the lead single for the album Aladdin Sane (1973).
The song's chugging R&B riff is often compared to The Yardbirds while the lyrics have been likened to the "stylised sleaze" of The Velvet Underground. The subject matter was inspired in part by Bowie's friend Iggy Pop or, in Bowie's own words, "an Iggy-type character... it wasn't actually Iggy." The line "He's so simple minded, he can't drive his module" would later give the band Simple Minds their name. The title has long been taken as a pun on the name of the homosexual author Jean Genet. Bowie was once quoted as saying that this was "subconscious... but it's probably there, yes".

"The Jean Genie" was composed and recorded in New York City, where Bowie spent time hanging out with the Warhol set's Cyrinda Foxe. In 2005 the singer described its genesis thus: "Starting out as a lightweight riff thing I had written one evening in NY for Cyrinda’s enjoyment, I developed the lyric to the otherwise wordless pumper and it ultimately turned into a bit of a smorgasbord of imagined Americana ... based on an Iggy-type persona ... The title, of course, was a clumsy pun upon Jean Genet".

Duran Duran White Lines feat. Grand Master Flash & Melle Mel

Grandmaster Flash ~ White Lines {Don't Do It}

White Lines {Don't Do It} by Grandmaster Flash © 1983

(Aaah, aaah, aaah, aaah)

Uhraah!
Bass!

Ooh White, White
Ooh White, White
Ooh White, White

(Ooh White Lines) Vision dreams of passion
(Blowin’ through my mind) and all the while I think of you
(High price) a very strange reaction
(For us to unwind) the more I see, the more I do
(Something like a phenomenon) Baby!
(Tellin your body to come along, but white lines blow away)
(Blow! Rock it! Blow!)

Ticket to ride, white line highway
Tell all your friends, they can go my way
Pay your toll, sell your soul
Pound for pound costs more than gold
The longer you stay, the more you pay
My white lines go a long way
Either up your nose or through your vein
With nothin to gain except killin’ your brain

(Freeze! Rock! Freeze! Rock! Freeze! Rock! Freeze! Rock!)
(Blow!)

(Ahhh) Higher, baby
(Ahhh) Get higher, baby!
(Ahhh) Get higher, baby!
And don't ever come down! (Freebase!)

Rang dang diggedy dang di-dang
Rang dang diggedy dang di-dang
Rang dang diggedy dang di-dang
Diggedy dang di-dang diggedy dang di-dang

(Pipeline) pure as the driven snow
(Connected to my mind) and now I'm havin’ fun, baby!
(High price) it's getting kinda low
(Cause it makes you feel so nice) I need some one-on-one, baby!
(Don't let it blow your mind away) Baby!
(And go into your little hideaway ‘cause white lines blow away)
(Blow! )

A million magic crystals, painted pure and white
A multi-million dollars almost overnight
Twice as sweet as sugar, twice as bitter as salt
And if you get hooked, baby, it's nobody else's fault, so don't do it!

(Freeze! Rock! Freeze! Rock! Freeze! Rock! Freeze! Rock!)
Raah! (Blow!)

(Ahhh) Higher, baby
(Ahhh) Get higher, baby!
(Ahhh) Get higher, baby!
And don't ever come down! (Freebase!)

(Don’t you get too high) don’t you get too high baby!
(Turns you on) you really turn me on and on
(When you gonna come down) my temperature is risin’
(When the thrill is gone) no, I don’t want you to go

A street kid gets arrested, gonna do some time
He got out three years from now just to commit more crime
A businessman is caught with 24 kilos
He’s out on bail and out of jail
And that’s the way it goes
Raah!

(Kane! Sugar! Kane! Sugar! Kane!)

Athletes rejected, governors corrected
Gangsters, thugs and smugglers are thoroughly respected
The money gets divided
The women get excited
Now I’m broke and it’s no joke
It’s hard as hell to fight it, don’t buy it!

(Freeze! Haha ha ha! Rock! Freeze! Rock! Freeze! Rock! Freeze! Rock!)
Raah! (Blow!)

(Ahhh) Get higher, baby
(Ahhh) Get higher, girl!
(Ahhh) Get higher, baby!
C’mon!
Raah!

(White Lines) Vision dreams of passion
(Blowin’ through my mind) and all the while I think of you
(High price) a very strange reaction
(For us to unwind) the more I see, the more I do
(Something like a phenomenon) Baby!
(Tellin your body to come along, but white lines blow away)

Little Jack Horner sitting on the corner
With no shoes and clothes
This aint funny, but he took his money
And sniffed it up his nose

(Hey man, you wanna cop some blow?)
(Sure, what you got, dust, flakes or rocks?)
(I got China White, Mother of Pearl, Ivory Flake, What you need?)
(Well yeah, well let me check it out man, just let me get a freeze)
(Go ahead man, stuff I got should kill ya!)
(Yeah man th-that’s that’s raw, wuh)

(Freeze! Haha ha ha! Rock! Freeze! Rock! Freeze! Rock!
Freeze! Rock! Freeze! Rock! Freeze! Rock!)
